In July I had the pleasure of delivering a very different landscape tour of the Bowhill Estate. One that explored how our woodlands can inspire us and create something beyond ephemeral moments, something of permanence beyond the often fleeting circle of life and decay.
For those of you who have visited Bowhill House for a tour this summer, you will have been treated to a selection of hyper-realistic textiles of lichen and fungi. There are two things about this collection that you may not know. Firstly, the collection is the “Bowhill” collection, with everything on display being an exact replica of flora found on the estate. The other, is that this is part of a larger collection including creations from Drumlanrig Castle and Boughton House, created by Amanda Cobbett.

“Amanda Cobbett is an award-winning textile artist with over 30 years’ experience.
She took up embroidery after a successful career as a Fashion print designer because she wanted to return to the art of making and a more meaningful approach to textiles as a medium. Through walking in the forest, Amanda found the perfect subject matter to faithfully replicate. She carefully documents each find and notes it location. Amanda has adapted a very simple embroidery technique to create 3 dimensional embroidered hyper-real sculptures. This ‘slow textile’ process has garnered interest from scientists, art collectors and textile enthusiasts alike.
The process of research, development, stitching, and outcome has a mindful rhythm.
In my footsteps as I walk, I’m imagining stitching a line along the contours of the forest paths like that of like a dotted line on an OS map, with one continuous thread couching me down to an environment that I want to belong to, one that I’m curious about. So concerned for species that we might be inclined to overlook and neglect amongst the forest understory, I’m encouraged to stitch them back into being, to remind us of their importance in our delicate ecosystem. There is something about the nature of a stitch through its strength, its permanence, and its place throughout history that these ‘quiet beauties’ cannot outlast. It will never be the solution to stop their potential denigration, but perhaps it will be a gentle reminder to keep a watchful eye on these vital species.”
Joining Amanda was Natasha Goodfellow, writer, editor and curator with an interest in nature, people, craft and design. Natasha has been commissioned to write a small book, looking at how Amanda’s project was initiated, her inspiration across the estates, the making process and Duke Richards passion for collecting and his reflections on Amanda’s art. The book is due to be published sometime in 2026.
Natasha was especially interested in visiting the estates and not only gaining insight into the natural landscape that inspires Amanda’s art, but also to connect in a way that can only be achieved through immersion in nature itself.

Embarking on our adventurous exploration of some of Bowhill’s lesser known areas, we spent time roaming the dark corners of the largely untouched area of Howe Bottom. Howe Bottom lies to the south of the Duchess’s Drive as you ascend Fauldshope Hill and is home to an unbelievably diverse array of flora and fauna. Tendrils of moss drip from tree branches, whilst the dark understory becomes a tangled eruption of foliage and life. A healthy woodland is an untidy woodland, and an old healthy woodland is a place that only the most robust of explorers dare to enter. We peered into the darkness from the safety of the tracks, listening to furtive bird calls and marvelled at the lush vegetation occupying every nook and cranny. A perfect home to some of nature’s often overlooked champions.
As Amanda made more discoveries and collected twigs cloaked in lichens, Natasha started to understand the process and the inspiration driving Amanda’s creations. Alongside my narrative, the story began to form, just like a time-lapse of a fruiting body emerging ever so slowly amidst the undergrowth.
The presence of fungi and lichen are dependent upon a number of factors in any given habitat, with lichen in particular being highly intolerant to pollution. Fungi and lichen have preference for specific conditions, some like a certain type of tree and others a specific type of soil, but it is time that changes the character of the landscape, one sub-community at a time.

Succession, the process of habitats changing from one habitat type to the next, is a natural phenomenon and one that both fungi and lichen play a critical role, but in the modern day and age, this needs to be facilitated through truly sustainable land management practices.
Many current woodland management practices rely on relatively short crop rotations, due to production pressures, and it can take several rotations for soils to adapt (a minimum 40 years per rotation), whereas a more natural woodland can start to develop a diversly structured understory at around 50 years. Planting structure can also be a limiting factor, with closely planted forest stands restricting light and therefor growth. Continuous Cover Forestry, a practice that relies on selective removal of trees, opens the canopy to allow increased light and also room for new growth and regeneration to become established. Species diversity is also a critical component in healthy woodland ecosystems, providing various food sources and allowing ecological niches to develop.
These factors and management practices have been incorporated into the management of Buccleuch woodlands for centuries, which is the sole reason why it has such diversity and is a truly magical place to visit and work.
Fungi
Orchestrating some of the most vital ecological processes, fungi are a critical component of a healthy ecosystem. By breaking down dead organic matter, saprotrophic fungi can change soil composition through the release of phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon, keeping the ground fertile. Mycorrhizal fungi interact with tree roots (mutualism), extending networks and helping with nutrient and water uptake, whilst receiving valuable sugars produced through photosynthesis in return. Some fungi can act as endophytes living inside plant tissues and boosting resistance to drought, pests, or disease.
Fungi are also an essential food source for many species, attracting birds, mammals and insects (fungivores). Many fungi become available as other sources, such as fruit, become less obtainable in the autumn months.

Fungi take many forms and it takes a very expert eye to correctly identify any given species. The best way to improve your skills is to join a local group, where enthusiasts share their expertise and passion. There are also numerous apps and webpages that can provide you with useful tips, but a good book will go a long way. With over 12,000 species of fungus in Scotland and 60 species recorded just in the immediate vicinity of Bowhill House, a good start is to classify the species by taxonomic order. Look out for Agaricales (gilled and allies), Polyporales (bracket), Lycoperdales (puffballs), Boletales (boletes), Hypocreales (hazel gloves), Thelephorales and Cantharellales (tooth and chanterelles), Pezizales (cup) and Helotiales and Sordariale (tiny decomposers).
Lichen
A healthy, biodiverse and stable habitat will most likely have lichen. Lichen, often mistaken for moss, are a symbiotic relationship between fungus and algae or cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), so is not actually a single organism. Mutualism occurs, with the fungus creating a protective structure called a thallus and the algae acting as a photobiont, performing photosynthesis to provide carbohydrates and nutrients for the fungus.
Lichens themselves create microhabitats for insects and provide material for nesting birds. Lichen can also subtly alter bark pH, allowing colonisation by a variety of epiphytes and bryophytes. This is also evident through chemical weathering of rocks, contributing to soil development and again facilitating colonisation and successional processes.

Scotland is host to 1,500 species of lichen and a survey completed on the Bowhill Estate in 2023, identified an astounding 188 species. Lichens are divided into three main categories: Crustose; Foliose and Fruticose. Crustose lichens form a crust that is closely attached to substrate, like bark or on rocks; Foliose lichens are leafy and flat, with only a partial attachment to substrate and Fruticose lichens come in a variety of 3D structures, often adorning branches like a beard. Bearded lichen are of the Usnea family and are one of the easier species to spot when out on a walk. Again, whilst some lichen species are easy to identify, there is a scientific approach to accurate classification and getting involved with a local group is a great starting point for beginners.
