Whilst the weather certainly proved a challenge at times, it has not stopped many visitors and young naturalists from enjoying the Bowhill Grounds. It is a personal highlight of our open season when I chat with visitors and I always love to hear of their explorations and joy gained from the romantic landscape in this quiet corner of the Scottish Borders.

Education combined with Nature
At Bowhill, children embark on exciting, hands-on adventures that nurture a love for nature while offering a break from the classroom. Learn how delicate creatures, like the damselfly and froglets, have helped our young explorers connect with the environment and spark curiosity about the world around them…

Mini Rangers
This year’s Mini Ranger sessions for under 5’s were full of adventure and creativity! From crafting Mud Faces to building Bug Hotels, the tots had a blast exploring and getting messy.
The over 5’s took things to the next level, with orienteering, den-building, and sharpening their wildlife ID skills through exciting discoveries by the Loch…
Summer Wildlife
Moths. Lots and lots of moths…
This year at Bowhill, while children’s activities took centre stage, biological recording quietly continued. Late-night moth trapping along the Lady’s Walk revealed 179 species, including the rare Barred Hook-tip and five priority species.
With lots of new insights into Bowhill’s wildlife, there’s plenty more to uncover about these fascinating finds…

Autumn at Bowhill
A part of Gilpins vision for Bowhill in the development of its landscape, was to create a romantic setting to frame and complement the house. This led to extensive mixed species planting in what is now the designated area of Gardens and Designed Landscape of the Borders Estate, bringing an explosion of colour and texture as the seasons change.
The Lower Loch is an artist and photographers dream, with reflections of the boat house creating a focal point and the larch of Pernassie Hill offering a golden back drop to the loch. This is by far the location I find most calming on the Estate, so when you visit for a walk, please do take a moment to enjoy this romantic and picturesque spot.
Have you ever walked around Bowhill in Autumn? If the answer is no, then our Season Pass is now an Annual Pass, meaning you can make the most of the waymarked walks all year round.
